Puppy Feeding 101: How Much, How Often
Share
Puppies grow fast, and their feeding schedule matters as much as what's in the bowl. Here's the simple version most vets agree on.
How often
- 8–12 weeks: 4 meals a day
- 3–6 months: 3 meals a day
- 6–12 months: 2 meals a day
- Adult (12 months+, breed-dependent): 1–2 meals a day
How much
Start with the feeding guide printed on your puppy food's packaging; it's based on weight and age for that specific formula. Then adjust by body condition: you should be able to feel ribs easily under a thin layer, but not see them prominently. A puppy leaving food behind may be getting too much; one licking the bowl clean and searching for more may need a little extra.
Three habits worth building early
- Fixed meal times make house training dramatically easier, since bathroom breaks become predictable.
- Fresh water always available, especially in our Philippine heat.
- Measure the food with the same cup every time, so "one cup" means the same thing every day.
One caution: puppies should eat food formulated for puppies. Growth formulas carry the extra protein, calcium, and calories that developing bones and muscles need.
