Bath Time Basics: How Often Should You Really Wash Your Dog?
Share
Some dogs get weekly baths, others get one when the smell wins. The right answer sits in between, and it depends on coat and lifestyle.
A practical schedule
- Short, smooth coats (beagles, pugs): every 4–8 weeks is usually plenty.
- Long or thick coats (shih tzus, golden retrievers): every 3–4 weeks, with regular brushing in between.
- Outdoor adventurers and dogs in humid weather: as needed; if there's visible dirt or odor, it's time.
Overbathing strips the natural oils that keep skin healthy, so more is not better. If your dog is itchy and flaky after baths, the schedule may be too frequent or the shampoo too harsh.
Use a pet shampoo, not yours
Human shampoo, even the mild kind, has the wrong pH for dog skin and can cause dryness and irritation. A gentle, pet-formulated shampoo protects the coat's natural balance. For dogs with skin conditions, your vet may recommend a medicated option; follow their guidance on frequency.
Make it a good experience
Lukewarm water, a non-slip mat, cotton in the ears if your dog tolerates it, and treats afterward. Dry thoroughly, especially thick coats and skin folds; staying damp in humid weather is a recipe for hot spots.
